General description
Guaiacol, a phenolic compound,[1] acts as a scavenger of superoxide radicals.[2] It is produced from guaiacum or wood creosote. Guaiacol acts as a precursor to different favoring agents like, vanillin and roasted coffee.[3] It is used as an antiseptic, analgesic and sedative drug for the treatment of dental pulp and periodontal tissue. Guaiacol enhances cell proliferation in vivo.[4] Application Guaiacol has been used: as a substrate for peroxidase enzyme to determine its activity[5][6] as a substrate to determine laccase activity[7][8] as a reagent in peroxidase (POD) activity test[9] Biochem/physiol Actions Guaiacol has an ability to inhibit prostaglandin biosynthesis, without causing damage to the gastrointestinal system, unlike classic NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).[10] Guaiacol, along with 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, is responsible for cork taint in wine. A method has been developed for extraction and quantitation of the two compounds. Caution May be liquid at room temperature. |
