DESCRIPTION
General description
Agar chemically consists of two fractions: agarose, a neutral polymer of high gel strength and agaropectin[1], a non-gelling fraction with sulfated β-1,3-glycosidically linked D-galactose units. Agar is a hydrophilic colloid obtained from marine algae (Rhodophyceae). It is soluble in boiling water and is of significance to the microbiological area.[2]
Application
Agar has been used in the plant growth media.[3][4] Typical working concentration: 6-12g/L. Agar has been used: as a reference standard commercial agar to compare the physio-chemical, gelling properties of alkali-treated agar from Gracilaria tenuistipitata[1] as a component in the seed germination medium and rooting medium for commercially available soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) seeds[5] as a component of growth media for B. subtilis mutant strain MTC871 based biofilm colonies[6] as a bacteriological agar component to prepare half strength Murashige-Skoog (MS 50%) medium for Echinocactus platycanthus seeds culture[7]
Biochem/physiol Actions
Agar is gel forming polysaccharide used as a gelling and stabilizing agent. Its serves as a cryoprotectant in processed foods, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics products.[1]
Other Notes
General purpose agar.
